Regular events in the University Year
The academic year at Oxford University runs from October to June. The year is divided into three eight week terms, Michaelmas (autumn), Hilary (spring), and Trinity (summer). These are the regular high-profile events and varsity sports:
- Encaenia - Oxford's annual ceremony to award honorary degrees.
- Sheldonian Series - A termly event convened by the Vice-Chancellor aimed to promote discussions about the big issues of the day.
- The Romanes Lecture - The principal lecture held in Oxford and open to the public.
- The Boat Races - 250,000 spectators watch the world famous Oxford and Cambridge boat race each year.
Dates of term
Oxford's year is divided into three terms and three vacations. Within each term, a 'Full Term' of eight weeks is the main teaching period. See the Dates of term.
