Students

If you are nearing the end of your schooling and are thinking about your next steps, our outreach programmes offer the chance to experience life as a university student, as well as providing expert advice on university admissions. We believe that a degree opens doors and is life changing for many people, but we also know that deciding where or whether to go to university is not always easy, particularly if you don't know people who have been, or who can tell you what it's like.

Oxford Cymru can provide you with the information and support you need to make informed decisions about your future. We mainly work with students aged 16 to 18, providing information about university admissions, helping you to explore what Oxford has to offer and developing the skills necessary to make successful applications to Oxford. We also work with students aged 11 to 16, providing the information you need to make informed decisions about GCSE and A-Level choices.

Our work with primary age pupils is increasing too. Not only to introduce them to universities like Oxford but to build confidence and encourage younger learners to aim high whatever their future choices may be.

You may be applying as a mature applicant with different requirements, support systems and other considerations when applying to university. We are keen to hear from and to support mature undergraduate applicants with no previous experience of university – do get in touch if you have any questions or would like to know more!

Oxford Cymru recognise that some students study without the support of a parent or carer and provide a support programme for undergraduates who are estranged from their families. The Oxford Cymru team welcome enquiries from estranged student applicants so please do get in touch with us if you have any questions. You can find out more about the support offered to estranged students here.

Teachers

Choosing where to go to university can be a life-changing decision. We hugely value the role that teachers and careers advisors play in encouraging students to consider their options and make informed decisions.

To support teachers, the University provides a range of continuous professional development and learning activities, some of which is accredited.  The CPD for teachers of students aged 16 to 18 relates to providing information about admissions, and supporting students applying to Oxford. Increasingly we are also working with Key Stage 3 and 4 teachers, helping with the development of curriculum support materials that will benefit a wide range of students. You can find out more about CPDs and other events for teachers here.

Jesus College also offers support to external agencies such as the National Association for Able Children in Education (NACE) by hosting conferences and delivering webinars offering advice and guidance to teachers and schools on developing skills for university. NACE members can find out about all NACE events here. For information on NACE events supported by Oxford Cymru, please contact the Jesus College Access Fellow

We are also creating Hub Schools and Teacher Champions, which you can find out more about within the In Your Region area below.

Families

Happy and safe, that's all we want for our children, but sometimes it's not so easy to know how to help them get there. As a parent, carer or supporter, you are in a great position to support your child as they make decisions about their education.

Here at Oxford, we really value students' families and want you to have all the information you need to feel confident in your important supporting role. We have put together guidance and resources For Families, to help you to encourage your child to look ahead and consider the implications of their choices.

Oxford Cymru recognise that not all applicants will have the support of a parent or carer. For example, you may be an older applicant or a teacher/advisor guiding a student studying without family support. Please be aware that the University has an excellent support programme for estranged students.
