Undergraduate life at Oxford: A Very Short Introduction

If you’re looking for an introduction to undergraduate study and student life at Oxford, you’re in the right place. Discover the academic experience, vibrant community and opportunities that define life at Oxford, before taking a closer look at the aspects that interest you most.

Oxford is... what you make it

If you're just beginning to think about university and are curious about what Oxford is like, read on. Some people worry they might not be the Oxford "type", but there is no such thing. There is no typical Oxford student and no single Oxford experience. Our staff and students come from all kinds of backgrounds; what they share is a love of learning and a persistent curiosity. We believe this makes Oxford one of the most stimulating university environments anywhere.

Studying is, of course, central to the Oxford experience. You will have access to some of the best teaching and learning opportunities in the world. Your degree, however, is about more than academic work. Whether you’re relaxing with friends, playing sport, leading a campaign you care about, volunteering in the community, rehearsing for a play, or trying something entirely new, how you spend your time outside your studies is largely up to you. The work is demanding, but if you enjoy your course and manage your time well, the opportunities available to you are extraordinary.

We also recognise that university is a significant financial commitment. It’s important to understand what support is available, particularly if you are from the UK. We offer one of the most generous student support packages of any UK university and are committed to ensuring that no student offered a place is prevented from coming because of cost. Oxford spends over £11 million each year on student support, and around one in four UK undergraduates currently receives a bursary.

Rather than take our word for it, we encourage you to explore Oxford for yourself. Our colleges and departments run events both online and in person, in Oxford and across the UK, so you can find out more. One of the best times to visit is during our 2026 undergraduate Open Days, which will be held on 1 and 2 July and 18 September. More detailed information will be published online in advance of each event.

We look forward to welcoming you to Oxford.
