Your voice matters
At Oxford, students play an active role in shaping their University. The Student Union exists to ensure that undergraduate voices are heard, valued, and reflected in the decisions that affect your education and experience.
Speaking up at Oxford
As an undergraduate, your experience of teaching, learning, and college life matters. Oxford SU, the Student Union represents undergraduate students on issues including academic provision, assessment and feedback, welfare and wellbeing, equality and inclusion, and the wider student experience.
Through elected representatives and consultation with students across colleges and courses, the Union gathers undergraduate perspectives and presents them directly to University decision-makers. This ensures that the realities of undergraduate life help to inform policy, planning, improvements and bring about change across the University.
From colleges to the University
Oxford’s collegiate structure means that much of student life is rooted in colleges. The Student Union works closely with college common rooms and undergraduate representatives, supporting local advocacy while providing a University-wide voice.
This partnership allows issues raised in colleges to be shared more widely where appropriate, ensuring that undergraduate concerns can lead to discussion and action beyond a single college or course.
Campaigns and causes
The Student Union supports students to raise awareness of issues that matter to them and to take part in campaigns that aim to improve the student experience and contribute positively to the wider community.
Student-led campaigns cover a wide range of topics, from education and welfare to sustainability, equality, and community engagement. The Union provides guidance and practical support to help students develop campaigns that are inclusive, constructive, and effective, and that reflect the diversity of student views at Oxford.
Alongside campaigns, the Student Union works with students on charitable initiatives, supporting fundraising, volunteering, and partnerships with local and national organisations. These activities give undergraduates opportunities to contribute beyond the University and to develop skills in leadership, collaboration, and civic engagement.
Ways to get involved
All students are automatically members of the Student Union, and there are many ways for undergraduates to take part, whatever your interests or level of experience.
You can:
- vote in Student Union elections and referendums
- stand as an undergraduate representative for your college, course, or the wider University
- contribute to surveys, consultations, and discussion forums
- take part in campaigns or help shape new initiatives
- get involved in fundraising, volunteering, or charitable projects supported by the Union
Students can choose to be involved occasionally or take on more sustained roles, depending on their time and interests. Training and support are available for those who wish to represent others or lead projects.
