Shaping policies and initiatives

Oxford students help shape the policies and initiatives that affect their education and experience. From teaching and assessment to wellbeing, inclusion, and community life, student insight plays an important role in how the University develops and improves.

This work is supported through partnership between students, Oxford Students’ Union (Oxford SU), and the University. Through consultation, representation, and ongoing dialogue, student perspectives contribute to both major strategic plans — such as the Access and Participation Plan — and to a wide range of academic and student-focused initiatives.

How student consultation contributes to change

Student consultation at Oxford is structured and ongoing. Oxford SU works with the University to gather feedback and evidence from students across colleges, courses, and backgrounds.

This consultation includes:

  • academic and course feedback shared through student representatives
  • college-based input raised through common rooms
  • surveys, focus groups, and research projects led or supported by Oxford SU
  • discussion within student forums and representative committees

Together, these routes help identify what is working well, where students face challenges, and where new or improved initiatives may be needed.

Policies and initiatives shaped by students

Student consultation contributes to a broad range of University policies and initiatives, including those relating to:

  • Teaching, learning, and assessment - such as curriculum design, feedback practices and academic support
  • Student welfare and wellbeing - including mental health provision and access to support services
  • Equality, diversity, and inclusion -  addressing barriers linked to background, disability, race, gender, or caring responsibilities
  • Access and participation - through the development and delivery of the University’s Access and Participation Plan
  • Student life and community - including sustainability, volunteering, and engagement beyond the University

In each case, student insight helps shape priorities, inform decision-making, and assess the impact of change.

Access and Participation Plan

Oxford's Access and Participation Plan agreed with the Office for Students is one example of how student consultation feeds into University policy. It brings together evidence from students to support fair access, academic success, and progression for students from under-represented backgrounds.

Importantly, the APP sits alongside — and is informed by — wider work on teaching quality, student support, and inclusion. This ensures that access and participation is integrated into the University’s broader approach, rather than treated in isolation.

From consultation to support on course

Student feedback does not stop at identifying issues. It also informs change and how support is designed and delivered once students are at Oxford.

As a result of student consultation, initiatives may include:

  • academic transition and skills support
  • inclusive approaches to teaching and assessment
  • financial support such as bursaries and hardship funding
  • improvements to welfare, disability support, and student services

Oxford SU continues to share student feedback as these initiatives are developed and reviewed, helping the University adapt its approach over time.

What this means for you

For applicants, this approach means joining a University that:

  • values student experience as evidence for decision-making
  • listens to students when developing policies and initiatives
  • supports students academically, financially, and personally once they arrive
  • encourages students to contribute to shaping their environment

Whether through everyday feedback, representation, or consultation on major initiatives, students at Oxford help influence how the University evolves during their time here.
