This page provides information on the reduction of some student course fees for continuing students for the 2024/25 academic year. Affected students have been contacted directly to provide an update on arrangements, and adjustments will be made by the end of Week 8 of Trinity term 2025.
The University’s policy is that student course fees are increased annually by up to 6%, or the Consumer Price Index (CPI) if that is higher. This information is outlined in your Student Terms and Conditions and via information on the University's Changes to Fees and Charges page.
In line with this policy, fees for 2024/25 were set in September 2023 based on the CPI of August 2022 at 9.9% as per the usual process for fees to be agreed for a forthcoming academic year. 2024/25 fees were therefore agreed to increase by this rate. CPI then fell to 6.7% in August 2023 and to 2.2% in August 2024.
This process for agreeing 2024/25 fees aligns with the University’s policy on fee increases that has been in place for the past ten years. However, the University has determined that the date at which CPI would be based could have been clearer in communications to students. As a result, the August 2023 CPI rate of 6.7% has been agreed to retrospectively apply to 2024/25, resulting in a reduction to some course fees for this year.
These changes will impact students who continued their studies into this current 2024/25 academic year across a range of courses, including international undergraduates, postgraduate master’s, plus postgraduate research courses in Humanities and some areas of Social Sciences. Students on affected courses have been contacted directly. This change only relates to fees for students who continued their studies into this year, and not for students who started their course in 2024/25.
What does this mean for students on identified courses?
Continuing students whose fees increased by more than 6.7% for the 2024/25 academic year will see this increase reduced to 6.7%.
This will depend on how your course fees were originally paid for the 2024/25 year and whether third party funding is in place, for example through a scholarship or sponsor, or if you paid your fees directly.
All payments or other adjustment arrangements will be made through your college or department depending on who collected your fees at the start of this academic year. The University will supply information on revised individual student fee liability for 2024/25 to colleges and departments. Your college or department will then contact you to confirm arrangements, with all reductions due to be processed by the end of 8th Week of Trinity term.
If you are continuing your course into the 2025/26 academic year, your fees will be increased by a maximum of 6% for September 2025.
Fees for 2025/26 were published on the University website in September 2024. Some of these fees will be reduced, and course fee rates for 2024/25 and 2025/26 will be republished on the Course fees page, and Fees, funding and scholarship search page by the end of Trinity term 2025.
Course fees that were increased by 6% or less between 2024/25 and 2025/26 are unaffected.
If you are a postgraduate research student out of course fee liability and pay the University Continuation Charge (UCC), you will be contacted directly as part of the Trinity term billing cycle for the UCC, to confirm how any reduction will be managed.
The University had reviewed individual student cases to confirm the level of reduction for course fees and how this adjustment will be made. This process is complex, and staff across the University have worked hard to provide more detailed information to colleges and departments for them to process to their students directly. All fee reductions are expected to be completed by the end of 8th Week of Trinity term 2025.
