Oxford in the World
For centuries, Oxford has brought together people and ideas that have shaped societies and advanced understanding. Today, that heritage carries a renewed responsibility.
Oxford in the World reflects how the University lives that responsibility through external engagement ensuring that its knowledge, resources and convening power serve the public good.
The challenges facing our world are interconnected and urgent: climate change, conflict and displacement, inequality, pressures on public services, rapid technological change. Responding to them requires more than academic excellence alone. It requires partnership, openness and a commitment to co-creation. External Engagement is the way Oxford works alongside others locally, nationally and globally to translate research and education into practical impact.
At the local level, this means widening educational opportunity, supporting community wellbeing, sharing cultural and sporting facilities, contributing to regional innovation and engaging with local policy and practice. Nationally, it involves collaboration with universities, government and industry to inform public debate, strengthen public services, support inclusive economic growth and expand access to lifelong learning. Globally, it includes strategic research partnerships, engagement with international institutions, support for those affected by crisis and conflict, and the development of tools and technologies that advance global public goods.
Across all levels, our approach is grounded in respect, inclusion and evidence. External Engagement connects research, innovation, culture, education and enterprise, ensuring that Oxford’s work does not remain within its walls but contributes to society in tangible and lasting ways.
Oxford in the World is, ultimately, about partnership: working together to understand the world as it is, and to help shape the world as it could be.
